Should you wear weightlifting gloves, or not?

Pretty short answer: No.

That was probably the shortest blog post you have ever read. 😄

But wait, there are still some things to talk about!

Why shouldn't you wear weightlifting gloves?

Why do people wear them, and others don't ?

Here are some Pros and Cons for wearing gloves during your workout.

Walk into a weight room, and you will find two types of lifters:

Those who wear gloves and those who do not. Never. Under any circumstances.

If you are a newbie, you might not understand why this would be such a large divide.

Lots of guys do wear gloves. For some, they just rock the gear because it's something they've seen on other people. Simply as an accessory.

But are there actually Pros on wearing gloves?

Well, not many but:

PROS

  • Protecting hands from callouses and rough hands

  • If you have open tears on your palms and wouldn't be able to lift at all without the extra protection

  • Reason number one for weightlifters is that they sweat so much, that they lose the ability to grip the bar without the gloves.

But are gloves a good reason for sweaty hands?

No.

If you have sweaty hands, simply use chalk, climbing or powerlifting powder. If that is too dirty for you, they have liquid versions as well. Problem solved.

CONS

  • Holding you back from developing a stronger grip

  • weakening your forearms

  • weakening the strength in your arms

  • limiting proper form on moves like the power clean

  • losing a ton of natural grip training

After all, that fine etching in your barbells and dumbbells isn't just there to rough up your hands - that's called knurling, and it's there to help you to get a better grip.

That inability to take hold of the bar, with gloves on, is an issue because you lose your full grip strength with the extra layer of material between the bar and your hands, and for the simple fact, that you can't feel the bar as well.

When your hand is in direct contact with the weight, you can more easily adjust and precise with your grip, without the gloves. You can squeeze harder through your pinky, or squeeze more aggressively around your index and middle fingers.

You can't do those things as properly or naturally, when wearing gloves.

In the end, it is your choice to which category of lifters you want to belong to.

But when in doubt,

Read the Cons again! 😉
